Bitumen stained sand and photos are found | #4
|
I noted in the comments section at Thisisntsydney someone referring to black sticky sand they played in as kids , I remember this as well on a few old blocks
along Trafalgar ave
Possibly this brown stained sand was what was left over from the ground staining the army did to hide roads from the air , the white sand stood out against the green vegetation making them quite obvious , so certain sections were coloured somehow , possibly with sump oil or bitumen , this info is noted on some documents i found recently at the National Archives site any thoughts ? Also I now have some aerial photos of the strip here http://news.webshots.com/album/563126146ISgDEt?vhost=news

Dear Steve,
My mother moved to Woy Woy as a child and both her and my father went to woy woy school and ettalong school respectively-My grandfather had an engineering workshop in Moana St when Woy Woy when Woy Woy had dirt roads and the Everglades was swamp.Anyway, my mum has photos of the plane in the roof of a house on the end of trafalgar ave, and that is where dad taught her to drive on the old runway.I ma sure she would have may tales to tell you she has the memory of an elephant. My grandfather hung with Eric Worrell when the reptile park was in Umina, he made a lot of the awnings in Gosford and mum knows heaps of local history. Send us an e-mail if you are interested. Cheers, Corrina (Warrant) |

contribution to Peninsula News | #8

Hi Steve,
Your website is a wonderful place for locals to visit and find out more about their local area. We were wondering if you might be interested in making a contribution to Peninsula News? We were thinking of using your information as historical articles in the newspaper, would you be interested in contributing to this? If so, give me an email at mail@peninsulanews.asn.au I think our readers would love to read about the local history of the Peninsula, especially on things they might not have heard of before (eg: the Woy Woy military airfield) Cheers. Clare Graham |
